BSC Benefit From Clinical Finishing Against Welfare

BSC Glasgow 3 – 0 Whitehill Welfare :: Ferrari Packaging Lowland League :: Indodrill Stadium, Alloa :: Saturday 22nd April 2017

Written by Sam Jenkinson

A super second half from Stephen Swift’s BSC Glasgow side saw them pick up all three points in their Ferrari Packaging Scottish Lowland Football League finale against Whitehill Welfare.

A perfect volley from Gary Redpath gave BSC the lead after five minutes in the second period, before Robbie Duncan doubled the lead with a deft header ten minutes later.

Aidan Ferris capped off another league season full of goals with a wonderful, nonchalant hit from outside the box to finish off any threat from Saturday’s visitors as the new manager picked up his second win in as many games.

Goalkeeper Joe Wilton returned to action for the first time since the beginning of January after a shoulder injury, given a chance to impress the new man in charge before Friday’s Lowland League Cup clash with Cumbernauld Colts.

A solid performance from the keeper and his defence gave BSC Glasgow their first clean sheet since December.

It was almost as impressive a start as last week’s, as Ferris attempted to find Redpath at the back post before the ball was cleared behind for a corner.

The striker had a good chance of his own minutes later after some strong work in midfield from Arnult Bembo. Robert Jones, making his second start since he returned from injury, headed wide from eight yards out as BSC continued to threaten.

Whitehill keeper Ross Jardine had to be alert to palm out a low cross from Shaun Bowers after some good work from the full back down the right.

Redpath had a chance seconds before the break but he fired high and wide after a dynamic run into the Welfare box.

The midfielder made amends with his very next opportunity, with Robert Jones dropping deep and allowed to turn after picking up a long clearance. The striker lofted the ball through to Redpath, cutting in from the left before the ball sat up for him perfectly to slam across Jardine and into the top right corner.

It was so close to being two after Duncan’s corner made it all the way to Bowers at the back post, but he couldn’t connect properly.

Duncan's goal came just after the hour mark, though, as he ghosted into the penalty box, glancing a header past Jardine.

Welfare were penned in as BSC continued to confidently knock the ball about and keep their opponents in their own half.

Ferris, BSC’s top scorer for a second consecutive year, showed his ability with 15 minutes to go as he played a one-two with Duncan before turning and placing the ball into the top corner to make it three and grab his seventeenth of the season.

Bowers and substitute Husnain Mansoor had shots go wide as BSC saw out the game, which saw them jump up into seventh place with Gretna two points behind with a game still to play.

There’s still much to consider for Swift and his coaching staff as they travel to Broadwood to take on Cumbernauld Colts this Friday.

The two sides played out an enthralling 4-3 game the last time they met, with Colts holding off a spirited late comeback from BSC to take all three points. Swift will be hoping the outcome is reversed this time.

Team: Wilton; Bowers, Bell, Toner, Keys (Mansoor, 70); Brown (Corrieri, 59), Duncan, Bembo, Redpath; Jones (Lyons, 59), Ferris

Not Used: Barr, Niven, Woods
