CUP FINAL hero Gerry O’Connell bagged a double at Lesser Hampden as BSC Glasgow created a little slice of history in the shadow of the national stadium.

The SFA Challenge Cup holders defeated league opposition for the first time in their short history and it was a day to remember again for O’Connell whose wonder goal helped the club to that trophy success in May’s Final triumph against Civil Service Strollers.

New signing Aaron Connolly stamped his class all over the game up front and was the architect of all three BSC goals.

First he drifted clear on the right to fire over a cross that was blazed into the roof of the net by Ross McKinnon hot on the heels of his thumping goal in the 3-2 midweek defeat from League One champions Morton.

Queen’s, though, drew level when Sean Burns curled home a 25-yard free-kick to level the game at the break.

The League Two side were enjoying spells of possession but BSC were solid and disciplined and picked them off on the break when Connolly stole clear on the left this time and right midfielder O’Connell did his job superbly to come in off the flank and finish at the back post.

Five minutes from time an excellent result was sealed when Connolly threaded a cute ball through the Queen’s defence and O’Connell stabbed home.

Head coach Iain King said: “It’s always important never to get carried away in pre-season and I am fully aware that Queen’s - as they did so successfully last season - are going through a process of whittling down players to arrive at their squad.

“Yet that was an excellent, disciplined BSC display. We were good with the ball and worked ever so hard without it.

“Aaron Connolly was celebrating the birth of his son Ruairi earlier in the week and the wee fella was at his first BSC game so he can come every week now!

“Gerry also gave us a reminder of what he can bring and made a big impact too, I was delighted for him.

“The defence was rock-solid all day and we have a lot to work on in the three training sessions this week ahead of Albion Rovers at the Excelsior Stadium next Saturday.”
