BSC Glasgow dramatically qualified for their first ever Lowland League Cup Final

Civil Service Strollers 1 – 2 BSC Glasgow :: Lowland League Cup Semi Final :: Christie Gillies Park :: Saturday 13th May 2017

BSC Glasgow dramatically qualified for their first ever Lowland League Cup Final – with a late Strollers own goal and super penalty stop from Stephen Barr putting Stephen Swift’s side through after Aidan Ferris’ early effort.

Barr came back in for Joe Wilton as new BSC boss Swift continues to test out his goalkeeping options, whilst Matt Niven, Gary Redpath and Robert Jones also returned to the starting line-up.

BSC started well on the ground they lost on last month, showing the confidence gained from their cup run so far.

Robert Jones had the ball in the net after a deep cross from Traynor but the striker was called offside.

It was a sign of things to come, however, as Ferris moved into space at the back post and got on the end of a perfectly floated cross from Arnult Bembo to header over Strollers goalkeeper Stuart Burnside.

Niven nearly marked his return to the starting eleven with a goal following a free kick by Traynor, but he was denied by Burnside.

Traynor had a shot of his own go just wide as BSC dominated early proceedings.

But, after Ian Ballantyne headered over at the near post, the home side began to grow into the game.

And they took their chance nearly straight away, with a powerful run down the right from Froude ending in a low cross, which bounced off full back Shaun Bowers and in at the back post.

Barr had to make a smart stop from Craig Newall after the Strollers right back drove forward before the ball was in the BSC net once again – before referee Scott Millar ruled out for offside and kept the scores level.

After the break, Jones looked to get his side back into the lead, taking the ball past a Strollers defender before laying into Riccardo Corrieri, but the wingers shot was saved by Burnside.

Jack Downie and Chris Froude had shots from distance as both sides struggled to carve out chances in difficult conditions.

Niven had to be replaced after he collided with Barr, with vice-captain Mark Toner coming on to replace the BSC youth product.

With five minutes to go, Ferris picked up the ball on the left and drove inside before chipping the ball in. The ball looped off the shin of defender Robbie Laird and over Burnside to give BSC an advantage out of nowhere.

That advantage seemed like it was disappearing almost immediately, though, after Lewis Bell was adjudged to have fouled substitute David Churchhill just inside the box.

Downie stepped up, but Barr guessed correctly to save down to his right before the ball was slammed away. BSC defended well in the closing stages and qualify for their first final since 2015.

Spartans will be the opponents on Sunday after they defeated Gretna FC 2008 in the other semi-final.

The game will be played at Spartans’ ground, Ainslie Park, where BSC succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat just before Christmas.

Team: Barr; Bowers, Bell, Niven (Toner 75), Traynor (Keys 90); Corrieri, Bembo, Duncan, Redpath; Jones (Lyons, 64), Ferris

Not Used: Wilton, Brown, Mansoor, Woods
