WORLD CHAMP'S TRAINER SCHOOLS LOWLAND TEAM
WORLD CHAMPION boxing trainer Billy Nelson has started a training programme to get the BSC Glasgow Lowland League team fighting fit.
Billy trained pride of Scotland Ricky Burns to greatness as the WBO world lightweight kingpin and has now been added to the varied sessions our top team will go through over the winter months.
Half the squad worked out under Billy at The Hub gym in Airdrie on Thursday night with the rest of the pool doing detailed technical work with the coaching team at Hyndland 24 hours earlier.
Billy said: “BSC coach Iain King is a big boxing fan and knows the regime Ricky put himself through to get to the top in fighter in the world.
“I’m a big football man and we’ve always had a good laugh when Iain has been in the gym doing interviews with Ricky for The Scottish Sun.
“We both feel boxers are the fittest sportsmen around and that the sort of training they do can benefit footballers.
“It also mixes up their training regime and keeps it interesting as their season goes into the winter.”
Splitting the squad for one of the nights means the Lowland coaches can intensify one of their technical sessions with smaller groups of players.
And King stressed: “The players have already been given advice on their weights, body fat and nutrition.
“This gives them a chance to work with a world champ’s trainer and sharpen their fitness. Billy is one of the best in the boxing business and this can only benefit us.
“The other thing is it means the squad can start to get to know Mr Nelson because they’ll be getting to know him a whole lot better come pre-season in July!”
