It was a tale of two early goals for BSC Glasgow as Civil Service Strollers came to The Indodrill Stadium looking to boost their top six credentials.
A very even opening salvo was punctuated by a corner on nine minutes which saw Captain for the day Stevie Murray float in a delicious ball for Martin Grehan to rise and head past Stuart Burnside in the Civil Service goal. From there it was all BSC for a few moments as balls were constantly flying forward to the front line of Grehan and Jack Smith.
A moment of confusion in the Civil Service ranks saw one of their defenders handle the ball as it went out of play. Penalty to BSC Glasgow. Stevie Murray stepped up to take it, sent Burnside the wrong way before stroking the ball into the right hand side of the net to make it 2-0. So far, so good for Stephen Swift’s men.
From there it was either going to be a demolition job or a cagey affair and the latter proved true as Alex Cunningham’s men did their best to find a foothold in the match. Churchill and Froude were threats with their direct running – Froude’s snapshot was struck across Ryan Marshall’s goal and Churchill would have found himself clean through had it not been for the pace and quick thinking of BSC left back Jamie Mills.
Jack Smith had a chance for BSC just before half time, the prolific striker used his body well to escape the clutches of the Civil Service defenders but his shot was saved by a timely foot from Burnside who managed to smother the ball as it skewed back.
Half Time: 2-0 BSC
The second half got underway and almost immediately it was clear that Civil Service Strollers weren’t planning to meander to a defeat. They won a corner inside two minutes of the restart and it was almost a horror moment for Ryan Marshall as the BSC ‘keeper flew out to claim the ball before dropping it in mid air. The ball landed, pleading for a Civil toe to poke it home past the stranded ‘keeper but luckily for BSC Martin Grehan was there to stab it away.
Jamie Mills had a chance to make it three for BSC on 55 minutes when some intricate twisting and turning from Murray released him on the edge of the box. His lovely left footed strike was just too high before Steven Froude went up the other end and tried to show him how it’s done, his howitzer drive from 25 yards climbed over Marshall’s goal.
A good chance for CSS saw them hit the post with the ball skewing back and hitting Ryan Marshall. The ball looked for all the world like it was going to trickle over the line before it stopped dead on the line, allowing the BSC ‘keeper to smother it.
Civil Service had a bright second half and their persistence was rewarded when substitute Paolo Buzzi looped a header over Marshall in stoppage time to make it 2-1. It could have been a different story had the goal came a few minutes earlier but the referee blew the whistle just after the kick off, meaning it finished 2-1 to BSC Glasgow.
