Caramel Wafer Cup Leaves Bitter Aftertaste for BSC Glasgow

The young guns of Hamilton Academical proved too much for the BSC men as the home side put a much-changed BSC side.

Ryan Marshall returned in goal, Joe Irvine started at left back, captain Ross McMillan came back into the starting eleven following injury. Michael Anderson, Simon White, Thomas Collins and Robbie Duncan also made the starting eleven for the first time this season.

Despite the eventual score line, the game was surprisingly dull, especially in the first half. The best chance for Stephen Swift’s men came after a corner fell Ross Smith’s way but his shot was easily saved by Luke Southwood, Hamilton’s new goalkeeper on loan from Reading.

The deadlock was broken on the 37th minute – some nice passing allowed Jack Breen to find space in the box and slot the ball into the bottom left corner. BSC attempted to jump right back in and grab an equaliser but couldn’t break through the Accies defence.

Immediately following the restart, Robbie McNab and Jamie Mills came on, replacing Simon White and Joe Irvine.

BSC’s biggest chance of the game came in the 55th minute when Thomas Collins got onto a loose ball but his low strike was well saved by Southwood. Jamie Hamilton made his way onto the pitch replacing Robbie Duncan just before Accies doubled their lead.

Andy Winter got brought down in the box while on the attack and immediately the referee pointed to the spot. Winter converted from the spot and it looked as if BSC’s Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup hopes were over.

Thomas Collins almost grabbed a consolation but once again, his strike just couldn’t beat Southwood. With 15 minutes remaining, Andy Winter cemented the victory and a brace after getting a foot on the end of a free-kick.

Hamilton’s clean sheet was almost soiled when Robbie McNab found space in the box and got on the end of a low cross but again, Luke Southwood couldn’t be beaten.

The Colts extended their lead even further thanks to Sean Slaven capitalising on a quick counter attack, beating the defence and finding the back of the net. A fifth seemed possible in the dying moments after Accies hit the post.
